Description

A) Very similar to the staff and field officer's sword 1860. Blade is straight and tapers evenly to a point. The blade is etched on the obverse side with floral decorations, a military trophy, the U. S. Coat of arms. The reverse side is etched with a similar floral design and trophy, and the letters "U. S." The grip is covered with leather, is wrapped in gilded wire. At the top of the grip is a ferrule with leaf decorations. The entire hilt is cast in three pieces: the grip, pommel, and the guard, all of gilded brass. The pommel is a section of an inverted cone, decorated with an eagle on the obverse side and a shield on the reverse. The knuckle-bow is a flattened strip of brass decorated with scroll and floral patterns. As the bow turns up toward the blade, a branch bears off on the obverse side and joins a kidney-shaped counter guard which is decorated with an eagle and a trophy of flags. The reverse side has no guard. The quillon terminates above the blade in a button finial. B) The scabbard is of a nickeled steel with gilded brass mounts consisting of an upper band with two rings, a middle band with one ring, and a tip with a drag.
