SZENE IN DEN CATSKILL BERGEN, NEW-YORKEntry/Object ID
L.2012.18Description
Hotel guests at the famed resorts of the Hudson River Valley experienced the sweeping views and luxury accommodation. This engraving, which was published in both the English and German language editions of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, shows the female guests of the Grand Hotel waving good-bye to the "husbands' stage" as it left for the ferry terminal. In a long standing tradition already established by 1882, men returned to work in the city on summer weekends, leaving the wives and children to enjoy fresh air and healthy outdoor activity. In this image, the artist uses a bit of humor in illustrating the group of wives left behind during the week, clearly not all are avid outdoorswomen.
Engraving of a group of women on hilltop, waving to passengers of horse-drawn carriage on road below; women wave white handkerchiefs; one holds an open parasol; women wear decorative hats and two hold long poles or walking sticks; woods and mountains in distance; at bottom center, printed (in old German type): "Sjene in den Catskill Bergen, New York.--Abtahrt der Autldje vom hotel auf dem Cipfel der Catskills.--Nad Etizzen von Jofef Beder. (Eiehe Eeite 102.)"; at bottom right, penciled: "FRANK LESLIES ILLUS.", "1882"; at top right penciled, "25-"; verso, text.Made/Created

General NoteNote
Frank Leslie's German edition of the Illustrated Zeitung was primarily printed for the large German-speaking immigrant population in the United States. As one directory of the period stated "It is the German edition of his Ilustrated Newspaper. It reaches every German lover of art in the United States. It is taken in all public places, and constitutes a fine medium for advertisers in their efforts to reach German buyers of goods." It was published on Saturdays.
The English-language edition of this print is "View from the Grand Hotel, summit mountain of the Catskill Range--Departure of the 'Husbands' stage.' From sketches by a staff artist[Josef Beder].Note Type
