Note

An uncolored version of this print exists in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is dated January 15,1801. That image also includes a scroll tacked to the wall on the right side which states (as the HHV example does): "Rules to be Observed/ in this Society/ 1st That each Member shall/ fill a half Pint Bumper/ to the first Toasts./ 2nd That after Twenty four/ Bumper toasts are gone/ round, every may fill/ as he pleases./ 3 That any Member refusing/ to comply with the above/ Regulations to be fine [d] a/ bumper of Salt & Water." There are at least two versions of this image, (the original?) Rowlandson image (from which the print was taken) has women peeking in at the doorway at the right and no scroll on the wall [Jessa Krick, Collections Manager, 2/22/2017].
