Description

Two nearly identical square photographic prints with rounded upper corners mounted to a yellow card; prints depict an image of blooming century plant before large greenhouse with two small trees next to plant and tall trees visible behind greenhouse. Text on large paper label on reverse of card: "The Century Plant/ at/ MONTGOMERY PLACE, N.Y./ OVER 25 FEET IN HEIGHT./ CONTAINS / OVER 4,000 SEPARATE FLOWERS./ It was the intention of the late Mrs. Cora Livingston Barton, to enable everyone residing in her neighborhood to have an opportunity of seeing the Century Plant in bloom, which is a great curiosity, particularly in this latitude. The history of the Century Plant at Montgomery Place is well authenticated. It belonged to Mrs. Margaret Beekman Livingston the mother of Edward Livingston and grandmother of Mrs. Barton. It was so small during the Revolutionary war [sic], that it was kept in a flower pot in the drawing room of Mrs. Livingston at Clermont. At her death she bequethed [sic] it to her daughter, Mrs. Montgomery, the widow of Gen. Richard Montgomery. One of the former gardners [sic] at Clermont, who is still living and at Montgomery Place, remembers the plant for sixty years back. It has been for the last thirty-eight years under the immediate charge of Mr. Alexander Gilson, gardner [sic] at Montgomery Place, who now, to carry out the wishes of Mrs. Barton, invites all persons desirous of seeing the century plant to come and do so./ J. COUMBE,/ Photographer, Rhinebeck, N.Y."
