Description

Print from Felix O. C. Darley's 1849 engraved copperplate of The Headless Horseman Chasing Ichabod Crane, with lines strengthened and watercolors applied by Kredel: Ichabod Crane, with terror in his eyes, rides a bony, galloping, saddleless, and equally terrified Gunpowder, clutching him around the neck; the Headless Horseman, draped from head to foot in a black cloth and holding a pumpkin, follows quite closely on his black horse; the background includes a cloudy sky, a grove of twisted, nearly dead trees, and clouds of dust kicked up by the horse; framed with a wide, white mat in a modern frame.

Note

Accessioned in 1980, acquired before. In 1849, six new Darley illustrations for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow were published by the American Art Union in a special edition for its members. A set of these original prints by Darley were strengthed and colored especially for Historic Hudson Valley (Sleepy Hollow Restorations) by Fritz Kredel in the early 1970s for a special edition of prints published by Sleepy Hollow Press. Kredel's illustations were later accessioned into the HHV collection. [Jessa J. Krick, 11/24/2010]
