Note

In email correspondence with the law firm representing the estate of Ms. Summers, the name "McNeil" (as the artist) was referenced in relation to this painting, however the work is not signed. There were two paintings thought to be by the same artist in the estate (the other was of a landscape, unknown location), so it may be that the other piece was signed. The notation for this object in the list of bequests from the donor's will states: "Sleepy Hollow painting to Tarry Town, NJ [sic], Sleepy Hollow restoration." The painting is after the Currier & Ives image, known as The Mill Pond at Sleepy Hollow, which was published c. 1857-1872. The manor house as it appears here is the "Philipse Castle" alteration with additional wings. The canvas may well be older than the current frame, which appears to be c. 1930-50. The painting looks like it was re-backed at some point not long ago, and could have been reframed at that time. [Jessa J. Krick, Collections Manager, 6/16/2016].
