THE MILL POND, SLEEPY HOLLOW, AT TARRYTOWN, NEW YORKEntry/Object ID
L.2007.297Description
By the 1850s, the colonial history of Philipsburg Manor had been forgotten. In place of its role as a provisioning plantation dependent upon the labor of enslaved Africans, it was better known as the setting for Washington Irving's ghostly Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Artist William Rickarby Miller mined the area for inspiration and produced a series of images for Gleason's of buildings in the Sleepy Hollow area, including the Old Dutch Church. This image of the mill and mill pond is the third of the series. The accompanying text for this image emphasizes the Irving connection, crediting the author with "rendering the localities... treasured and classic ground."
Full page of Gleason's Pictorial with two engraved images, one, the mill pond at Sleepy Hollow and the other, Boston Harbor: heading: "Gleason's Pictorial"; under heading, an engraved image of Boston Harbor; in immediate foreground, a canoe on the water with two men manning the oars, and one gentleman standing; directly behind them on the water, multiple sailboats and two steamboats; another small canoe with four seated people shown on right side directly in front of a large sailboat; in background, buildings lining the harbor, many spewing smoke from their smokestacks; the domed City Hall sits in the center of these, and is the tallest; directly under the picture, a line of text: "F. Gleason, { corner of Tremont and Bromfield Sts Boston, Saturday, November 26, 1853. $3.OO per annum 6 cents single } Vol V. No22-Whole No. 126"; directly under this line, three columns of text, underwhich is an engraved image of the mill pond; in the background, sky and rolling hills; on right, a house and barn; large, leafy trees partially obscure the view of the houses; a picket fence borders the house and on the left, the barn; a small cart with two horses waits in front of the barn; a person carrying a basket of goods stands at the gate; a large pond at foreground, meandering into the distance; two cows stand drinking in the water; a group of ducks wade in the pond to the right, and stand on an embankment in the center; on the left, an embankment; trees and other foliage grace the bank, and grasses dot the foreground; directly under picture, the title, printed: "The Mill Pond, Sleepy Hollow, At Tarrytown, New York."; on viewer's left and within left corner of picture is written: "W.R.
