THE NEW HENDRIK HUDSON MEMORIAL BRIDGEEntry/Object ID
L.2012.269Description
History, technology and the realities of budget collided in the planning of the Henry Hudson Bridge in the early years of the 20th century. As this image shows, the 1903 plan for the "new Hendrik Hudson Bridge" to connect the island borough of Manhattan to the borough of the Bronx was to be built at Spuyten Duyvil, and combine a functional byway for automobiles with grand monument to Hudson. The design included classical columns and grand triumphal arches. Even before work began, delays and budget concerns dogged the project. Instead of opening in 1909, as the caption for this image promised, the bridge project fell behind schedule. After its cornerstone was dedicated during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration of 1909, almost thirty years would pass before the bridge opened. The completed bridge maintains the steel arch span shown in this image, but was built without the masonry supports and classical details.
Lithograph of proposed bridge over river at Spuyten Duyvil; single steel arch spans water at center; elaborate masonry arches toped by statues flank both sides of bridge span; three lower masonry arches over land on each side; roadway with pedestrians and cars curves along river and passes under center span of bridge; river with boats; Palisade cliffs visible in distance; at bottom left, printed (in image): "VERNON HOWE BAILEY, 03"; at bottom right, printed: "Drawn by Vernon Howe Bailey"; at bottom center, printed: "THE NEW HENDRIK HUDSON MEMORIAL BRIDGE"; at bottom left, penciled: "Harper's Weekly July 11, 1903"; at center of right edge, printed: "1153"; related text below image; partial image on verso.Made/Created
