Description

In the mid-19th century, it was possible to travel the world without leaving the comforts of home, thanks to the stereoscope viewer. This device, although with stereograph cards like this one, allowed a viewer to see a three-dimensional view of landmarks and historic sites and served as a popular home entertainment device. Here, the subject is the sheer stone face of the Palisades along the Hudson. It was likely part of a series of dual-image cards that documented sites and natural features along the Hudson River. Two nearly identical photographic prints mounted to yellow card; photographs depict rock outcropping of Palisades and river; photographs printed on single paper sheet and adhered to grey-colored board; photographs are rectangular with arced top; at bottom right, printed: "1424. The Palisades of the Hudson from the Mountain House; at left side, printed: "S. R. STODDARD PHOTO." at top center, printed: "CRYSTAL", at right side, printed: "GLENS FALLS, N.Y."
