THE PALISADES, SHOWING A SUMMER CAMP SETTLEMENTEntry/Object ID
L.2007.226Description
Summer encampments like this one sprung up at the base of the Palisades at the turn of the 20th century, offering a respite for city dwellers not far from crowded Manhattan streets. Ferries transported weekend campers from the city to Edgewater, New Jersey, and from Yonkers to Alpine, New Jersey. For very low cost, working-class people could have a holiday in the encampments, while travelers with a larger budget visited the Bear Mountain Inn or the Englewood House Hotel high above the river's shoreline.
Photograph of a group of tents at the base of the Palisades: perspective from aboard a boat; mostly smooth water in foreground; the Palisades run along the bank of the river above a large group of white tents on a grassy stretch between the cliffs and the river; near the horizon, a dock with many small boats; directly below the scene on far left corner, printed: "PHOTOGRAPH BY PRESS ILLUSTRATING SERVICE"; in center, printed title: "THE PALISADES- SHOWING A SUMMER CAMP SETTLEMENT"; on recto, text describing the story of the Hudson; below is the copyright: "PREPARED BY THE EDITORIAL STAFF OF THE MENTOR ASSOCIATION I ILLUSTRATION FOR THE MENTOR, VOL. 5, No. 12, SERIAL No. 136 I COPYRIGHT, 1917, BY THE MENTOR ASSOCIATION, INC."Made/Created
