PM.2005.3Description
Engraving in which five men are gathered around a table, perhaps in the marketplace, intently appraising particular objects: to viewer's far left is a standing man balancing a small animal cage on his shoulder; perched on his back is a rat, and in his left hand he holds an object between thumb and pointer fingers for inspection; a man seated at the table looks up at the object; next to him another man stands gazing intently at an object which he is holding; directly behind these two men stands a fourth man wearing a wide-brimmed hat; he is staring down at the object just described; to viewer's far right is a man standing stiffly to the side; he is shaded darkly; on the floor are various large containers, two of which are partially hidden underneath the table; inscribed on the top, at approx. mid point, is the artist's signature; on the back lower left corner is inscribed in pencil,"a53000/a47d155"; in back, lower mid edge is written,"55"; and on back lower right corner,"869".Artwork Details
