Description

John Casilear, a member of the Hudson River School known for his use of light, painted the original oil from which this engraving was taken for publication in the Ladies Repository. His fellow artist William Hunt owned the original work at the time of the engraving, although its current location is unknown. Numerous sketches by Casilear survive in museum collections, evidence of the usual practice of the artist and his fellows. They sketched at locations in the Hudson River Valley and then worked from sketches to create oils in the studio. This example gives a sense of space and perspective with large trees used to frame the view and lead the eye to the river in the distance. Colored engraving river valley landscape with path to river; in foreground, trees and rocks on hill; at center, river and mountains in distance; at center foreground, open field with path leading to river; low horizon with bright sky at right; at bottom left corner of image, printed, "MC"; at bottom, printed: "Engraved expressly for the "Ladies Repository" (Cincinnati) by R. Hinshelwood from a picture by J. W. Casilear. N.A.Owned by W. Hart. N.A."; below, title, printed: "THE RIVER-SIDE PATH." and "(A glimpse of the Catskills.)".
