THE STATUE OF "LIBERTY"--VIEWING THE HARBOR FROM THE TORCHEntry/Object ID
L.2012.266Description
The mouth of the Hudson empties into New York Harbor, where the Statue of Liberty stands as one of the nation's best-known and beloved landmarks. Liberty Enlightening the World symbolizes the gateway to America and the dreams of tens of thousands of immigrants, many of whom passed through New York to points north and west of the Hudson or made new lives for themselves on its very shore.
The island upon which the statue stands has a close connection to Hudson River Valley history. Adolph Philipse, the merchant whose empire encompassed Manhattan properties, Philipsburg Manor and Philipse Manor Hall, owned the island for a short period of time. In 1732, Mary Bedloe Smith, the widow of Dutch merchant and colonist Isaac Bedloe, sold the land known as Bedloe's Island to Adolph Philipse and Henry Lane. The city then leased the land from the owners as a quarantine station. Long before Lady Liberty symbolically welcomed immigrants, Bedloe's Island served as part of the city's defenses against communicable disease.
