THE SUMMER EXODUS FROM NEW YORK--THE ALBANY NIGHT BOATEntry/Object ID
L.2007.274Description
Published in Harper's Weekly in 1884, this illustration shows several parts of the hectic annual migration from the city. Long lines form at the docks, as porters man-handle trunks and baggage. Women and children appear to be the primary occupants of the indoor salon once aboard ship, while more men travel on the exterior decks. The circumstances of such a trip—long hours spend with strangers in the dark of night—might lead to romantic or otherwise illicit activity. Three decades later, a Broadway musical based on this premise of secret affairs aboard just such a ship confirmed the reputation these trips developed in popular imagination. Here, however, it appears to be a wholesome means of family travel.
