Description

Engraving, tinted: falls descend both sides of rocky island, upon which are three stylized conifers of disproportionately large size, to turbulently foaming pool beneath, which runs off as river at lower right. On left, in niche in craggy steep river side, two priests, in light blue habit, talk with gesturing gentleman, in red, with walking stick, stands beside pointing Indian, in head-dress and yellow breech-clout. A third gentleman, in blue, sits leaning on stick, gazing at falls, as does small and rather alarmed appearing white dog beyond him. On cliff above figures several evergreen trees shoot off at variety of angles. Like those on island, trees oddly over-large and highly stylized, giving print its most individual character. At right, on river bank, seven figures in breech-clouts, bearing luggage on heads, wind their way down path toward river. In background, lake and mountain landscape. Water and sky, shades of blue; foliage, dark green, yellow green; rocks, brown, reddish brown, buff. Immediately below scene, left, "R. Hancock fecit." At bottom left, descriptive title and text in English: "...Niagara...TEXT NEEDED"; at bottom right, same in French. In simple black painted 18th c. frame.
