Description

The centerfold of Demorest's Illustrated Monthly in July of 1865 featured a series of Hudson River images inspired by William Henry Barlett and accompanied by "To the Hudson," a poem by Rev. George B. Cheever. Better remembered for his strong denouncements of slavery than for his poetry, Cheever here includes references to beloved characters of Washington Irving's stories, the river landmarks, and finally an appeal to the patriotic sentiments of his readers. Evidently the publisher felt verses and images celebrating the Hudson would not be out of place alongside Demorest's more regular features: fashion plates and paper patterns. Twenty-six page illustrated journal: centerfold, Hudson River poem interspersed with six engravings; page 12, at top center, printed: "DEMOREST'S ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY", "TO THE HUDSON RIVER.", "BY GEO. B. CHEEVER. D.D."; image at center left, sailboats and steamboat on river, cliffs in background, captioned: "PALISADES"; image at center right, sailboat in choppy waters, buildings on mountain in distance, captioned: "NEAR COZZEN'S LANDING."; image at bottom left, houses at river's edge with sailboats in water and at dock, mountains in distance, captioned: "PEEKSKILL LANDING."; image at bottom right, cannons in foreground, river with sailboats and steamboat below, captioned: "VIEW FROM WEST POINT."; page 13, image at center left, view of river and mountain from above, boats on water, buildings on opposite shore, captioned: "CROW'S NEST."; image at center right, steamboat in river at night, moon partly obscured by clouds in sky, captioned: "VICINITY OF NEWBURGH."; image at bottom left, view of river from cliffs above, captioned: "STONY POINT."; image at bottom right, homes and church nestled in mountains, figure with sheep on road at center, captioned: "CATSKILL VILLAGE."; decorative border around pages; journal includes: illustrated cover page, sheet music, fashion illustrations and text, articles, and advertisements; printed on cover page: "DEMOREST'S ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY AND MME DEMOREST'S MIRROR OF FASHIONS", " 1865 / JULY."
