Created for a tobacconist’s shop in the mid- to late-18th century, this jar symbolizes how the Philipses, a New York family with wide-ranging international trade connections, opened new markets for Virginia tobacco in Europe during the colonial era. The Philipse family's mercantile empire was entrenched in enslaved labor and further facilitated by their political allegiance to British rule. Owing to their Loyalist stance, the Philipse family fled to England during the Revolutionary War and their properties, including Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, were confiscated by American authorities.
One of a pair of lidded tobacco jars decorated with Native American figure: each with slightly domed brass lid; bulbous shape, tapering sharply toward bottom; polychrome decoration as follows: in underglaze blue, border of C-scrolls and, at top, banner, enclosing at left on tobacco rolls, seated Indian with blue and yellow headress smoking long clay pipe, from which issues smoke forming central cartouche of two lions standing, one above the other, outlined in black and covered with overglaze brick red, surrounded by blue crown; at right, in underglaze blue, stern of sailing ship, against background of harbor; in lower foreground, lidded jar marked "RAPPE", and, in case of .162, "no. 11"; in case of .163, "No. 16"; Bottoms marked as follows: ('pk').Collection
