Description

On display at Washington Irving's Sunnyside, this cast iron trivet was a common and utilitarian tool used during the 19th century to hold hot irons. The trivet's not-so-common feature, though, is the medallion featuring a portrait of George Washington. Made long after the American Revolution and even Washington's death in 1799, the trivet demonstrates the enduring legacy and popularity of the nation's first president. Trivet; spade-shape framework, containing medallion with portrait of George Washington: 3/4 bust, in relief; handle somewhat suggestive of shape of Ionic column; three small legs.
