Note

For some years, it was thought that the brand was a conjoined "V" and "F" standing for Vredrick Philipse. More recent scholarship suggests that it is simply a stylized "F." This mark was registered in 1687 as Frederick Philipse's brand. Similar examples with Verplanck family history in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Acc. No. 53.100.
