UNDER THE CATSKILL FALLS

Name/Title

UNDER THE CATSKILL FALLS

Entry/Object ID

L.2012.146

Description

This, like Winslow Homer's Under the Falls seen nearby, shows the unique perspective of Kaaterskill Falls afforded to the more adventurous among the many Hudson Valley tourists. A series of wooden ladders and staircases allowed visitors to reach a narrow shelf of rock that widened out into an arched cave-like cavity behind the falls. Here, two small figures are shown high on the rocks, while one intrepid hiker has reached the viewing point, perhaps with his own sketchbook in his pack. From this spot, visitors could feel the spray and enjoy a thrilling sense of the true height of the falls, rather than only viewing them from above or below. Engraving of figure standing in cavern adjacent to waterfall; man with backpack and walking stick stands on rocks at bottom left; waterfall extends from top to bottom of image; rock ledge at top of image; trees and rock outcropping behind waterfall; mountains in distance at right; at bottom center, printed: "UNDER THE CATSKILL FALLS."; at bottom right, penciled: "1873"; verso, image captioned: "Pudding-Stone Hall."; at top, printed: "PICTURESQUE AMERICA."; text.
