Description

The dramatic falls at Kaaterskill Clove were a well-known landmark of the Hudson River Valley in the 19th century just as they are today. A frequent and favorite subject for the artists of the Hudson River School, the falls convey a sense of majesty and natural beauty in many of their canvases. Here, in an engraving after Winslow Homer, the falls are shown almost as a domestic space, with well-dressed fashionable women admiring them from the cave behind the falls. Homer made his first visit to the region in 1871 which included an excursion to Kaaterskill Falls. Here he has chosen to record the touristic experience, rather than a removed view of nature's grandeur. Wood engraving of cavern behind waterfall; two women at left, in dresses and hats, stand on rock ledge and gaze at waterfall; figures on rock ledge at back of cavern; two figures climb to ledge at center; many of the figures hold walking sticks; waterfall at right; at bottom center, printed: "UNDER THE FALLS, CATSKILL MOUNTAINS.--[FROM A PAINTING BY WINSLOW HOMER.]"; at right edge, printed, from top: "SEPTEMBER 14, 1872.]", "HARPER'S WEEKLY.", "721"; text on verso.
