Among the well-known engravings of steamship travel along the Hudson, this image by A. E. Emslie captures the spirit of 19th century tourism. Here, one gent gazes through binoculars at the far shore and a young girl admires the view, while another gent casually uses the railing as a foot rest, perfectly at ease before an ever-changing sightline. As the text that accompanied the image claims "... there is nowhere in the world a more beautiful and enjoyable sail than that up the Hudson from New York to Albany... those who enjoy landscape beauty for its own sake, will find here the most lovely combination of water, hill, mountain, rocky cliffs, and verdure-clad slopes..."
Page from Harper's Weekly with a wood engraving of well-dressed passengers on a covered deck of a steamboat oriented horizontally: a line of text along the top separated from the image with two lines: "488; HARPER'S WEEKLY.; [JULY 30, 1870."; below, at left foreground, a girl in a white dress leans on the rail and looks at the river; the passengers next to her deep in conversation; a man wearing white pants at center, deep in thought and conversation; to the right, two women sit next to a well-dressed African-American women; on the far right, a small child peaks around her mother's chair; in the back, a man uses binoculars to look at scenery; on the water, sailboats; in the distance, the peaks of the highlands; on bottom left, a mongram cipher "AE" followed by "mslie"; below the scene, printed: "UP THE HUDSON. - DRAWN BY A. E. EMSLIE. - [SEE PAGE 489.]"; recto, a page of text.Made/Created
