Notes

Overall Analysis: MP.88.258 B- Lid to urn was damaged on April 29, 2002. Decorative molding from the ceiling in the MP entrance hall fell and hit the urn lid causing it to break into three large pieces and two small pieces. An incident report was written and filed into the object file. Lid was conserved by Williamstown Art Conservation Center (2/25/2003), treatment report in object file. Remarks: Urn has hair line cracks around old repairs and from middle center to bottom and through handle area. (4/27/04) WACC Treatment Report, Feb. 25, 2003 by Michael Belman, Conservator. The surface of the ceramic was cleaned using a .5% solution of Orvus in water. Break edges were degreased with acetone, taking care to avoid previous restoration. The break edges were sealed with a 10% solution of Acryloid B-72 in xylene to prevent staining of the ceramic body. The fragments were joined using a 40% solution of Acryloid B-72 bulked with fumed silica in acetone. The adhered joins were gently heated with heat gun to adjust and tighten the joins. Small losses along the break edges were toned with Golden acrylic emulsions to minimize visibility. Major losses were filled with Poly-fix latex spackle bulked with cellulose powder. The fills were toned with Golden acrylic emulsions and coated with 20% solution of Acryloid B-72 in xylene to match the gloss of the ceramic glaze.
