VIEWS OF THE WOODLAWN CEMETERY, ON THE HARLEM RAILROAD, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK.Entry/Object ID
L.2012.40Description
Established in 1863, just three years before this illustration appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, New York's Woodlawn Cemetery offered a peaceful resting place for the dead and a retreat for the living. At the accompanying article states, it was situated just north of the city on the Harlem rail line and the three hundred park-like acres were intended to be a destination away from the noise of the metropolis for the living, a place
"along whose quiet paths it is a melancholy pleasure to wander, communing at once with rural charms, with monumental beauty and with the spirit of sanctity and repose that inhabits such a spot." Like Spring Grove Cemetery in Hartford and Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, non-sectarian Woodlawn served as a landscaped public park as much as a burial ground.
Newspaper page illustrated with eight separate engravings of a cemetery that highlight its natural setting: at top left, man walking along large open road, tall trees at sides, building at left, captioned: "[THE ENTRANCE TO THE CEMETERY."; at top right, pond with trees and small building, captioned, "SYLVAN DELL POND, RUSTIC LODGE, AND THE BOLTON MONUMENT."; center row at left, a monument marked "PETERS" and "WARD" with trees, captioned: "THE PETERS MONUMENT."; below, a tomb, captioned: "THE JEROME TOMB."; at center, a pond and fountain with small figures walking, captioned: "ENTRANCE POND AND FOUNTAIN--VIEW FROM HARLEM RAILROAD.", center row, right side, a monument, captioned: "THE HALL MONUMENT."; below: couple standing before tomb, captioned: "THE RECEIVING TOMB."; at bottom, an open field and trees, monuments and headstones on hill, horse and carriage, figures strolling, captioned, "GENERAL CENTRAL VIEW FROM CROWN GROVE PLOT."; at top left, printed: "Dec. 5, 1868.]"; at top center, printed: "FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER."; at top right, printed: "185"; at top center, printed: "Views of the Woodlawn Cemetery, on the Harlem Railroad, Westchester County, New York."; at bottom right, penciled: "4-"; related text at center; on verso, text.Made/Created
