MP.2002.14Description
Reproduction Chippendale hanging mirror of maple with an eagle at the top center. The top of the mirror has a flat, ornate, symmetrical shape extending 3 5/8 above the top of the rectangular frame that holds the mirror. The center of this piece is ornamented by a carved eagle perched on a branch with wings outstretched and head facing its proper left. The eagle is painted gold.
The left and right top sides of the mirror have flat pieces that are narrower toward the center of the mirror and get wider toward the top, terminating in flat scrolls. The bottom of the mirror has identical side pieces to those above, with the scrolls at the bottom instead of the top. There is a flat carved piece at the bottom, not as elaborate as the one at the top, which extends down from the mirror frame 2 1/4" at its lowest point. The frame itself is composed of molding.
Condition: Glass is loose. Silvering is damaged, showing deterioration overall, especially on proper right, where there are two vertical lines on bottom half, and at the center proper right, where there is a horizontal line extending halfway across.. Paper is detached from frame in back.Made/Created
