Description

Gilded looking glass with flat-topped pediment: reeded edge and cut back center section; ornament below(form top to bottowm): band of inverted acanthus leaves, ogee section, beading, band of inverted triangles, a frieze consisting of interconnected scrolls, bud-shaped devices, and stars on a stippled ground; rectagular quartrefoils flank frieze; reeded border around mirror; half columns on either side with the following turnings: tapering element, spools, urn with applied acanthus leaf detail, spools, column with carved diagonal reeding, inverted vase wi th applied leafy ornament, spools, flared element; bottom rail consists of the following turnings: tapering element, spools, vase, spools, inverted vase, spools, and flaring element.

Remarks: Details of condition: Wear and discoloration on bottom rail, overall crazing of gilding, overall spotting (appears to be flyspecks) particularly right proper bottom of pediment. Conserved by Peebles Island 1988. Frame structure stable overall; surface in poor condition; overall cracks; soiled areas, especially on turned bottom member; gilt and gesso lifing bottom edge of cornice 18" from right, small area of loss; black spots TLC and BLC; 1/2" area gilt and gesso loss bottom turned member, 13" from left edge; crack bottom turned member; corners worn; stain on side of BRC florette; 1 x 1 1/4" area of loss right side approx. 6" from top; 3/8" area of loss block TRC florette; right turned member with two small area of gilt loss, top; mirror spotted TLC; two large areas of mercury loss.
