Note

History of miniature: Miniature is of the period c. 1825-1830 or 1832 and seems English in style. It is known that several portraits executed of Irving at about this time in Europe seem to have disappeared. The possibility exists that this miniature may be one of these missing portraits. Artists of the missing pieces: Jose' Maria Escacena, for whom Irving posed in Spain in April of 1829: Foy, never further identified, who, after having been introduced to Irving by Leslie, painted him in Paris in 1824: and Vogel, for whom Irving sat in Dresden, early in 1823. The portrait in many ways is similar to that done of Irving by Charles R. Leslie in England in 1820: and for that reason, Foy might seem the most reasonable attribution. [source of information?]
