Painting: nearly half-length portrait of middle-aged Irving wearing a black coat: subject seated and turned to his right, three-quarter view of face; hair worn short and with sideburns; light-colored eyes; shadow of beard visible; sitter wears white shirt and stock; unidentified dark brown and light brown device on coat; seated on red upholstered armchair or sofa (arm barely visible in lower right corner); rest of background dark brown; written on back in ink: "Portrait of Washington Irving/ Painted by/ C.R. Leslie R.A. 1820"; pine stretchers with oak keys. b. Frame: Simple pine frame with slight molding on inner edge; frame gilded on front, not sides.
