Note

Based on additional research into copies of this image held in other collections (National Galleries of Scotland, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust), this image is part of series of five images by Bedford of the Red Horse Hotel on Bridge Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, interiors and exteriors, including the image of Irving's room. The Red Horse Hotel for many years after was known as 'Washington Irving's Inn" and traded on this connection for fellow Stratford tourists making the trip to Shakespeare's birthplace as Irving did. There are postcards of "Washington Irving's Parlor" at the hotel and the luggage tags include the phrase 'Washington Irving's Inn" [Jessa J. Krick, 4/39/2019]
