Description

Painted by Rebecca Phonise (or Phoenix) in 1795, this watercolor features towering mountains along the banks of the Hudson River. Perched atop one of these mountains is the artist's imaginative view of West Point in New York, where the Continental Army established a fort between 1778 and 1780. West Point was pivotal during the Revolutionary War due to its strategic location, as British Major John Andre demonstrated when he plotted with American General Benedict Arnold to surrender the fort in 1780. a. Watercolor painting, in natural pastel shades, of river landscape: foreground, trees and fields; at center, river, with boats; flanking river, mountain peaks, upon highest peak, at left, fortified citadel, showing American flag. b. Frame: Simple wooden period frame; ogee molding; inner beaded gilt molding.
