Anyone who wants to know more about Red Hookâs history will find themselves referring to A Brief History of Red Hook. Its author, Clare OâNeill Carr, knew and loved this area extremely well, as evidenced by her obituary from the Burnett & White Funeral Home site:
âClare O´Neill Carr, 60, a lifelong Red Hook, NY resident and local historian, died Sunday, April 6, 2003 at home. Clare was a Journalist and the Author of "A Brief History of Red Hook" which was published in 2001. She graduated from Bard College in 1978. She was a longstanding member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Barrytown, NY. She was a Board member and former president of the Egbert Benson Historical Society in Red Hook. Clare also served on the board of the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle at Bard College. She was also a member of the Edgewood Club of Tivoli, NY. Clare first wrote for the Barrytown Explorer, later working as a Writer and Editor of the Rhinebeck Gazette Advertiser and as a Reporter at the Poughkeepsie Journal. Recently, her articles on local history have appeared in "About Town". She was due to receive an award for her Walking Guides to the Villages of Red Hook and Tivoli. She was an avid gardener and preservationist who devoted her energies in recent years trying to save historic buildings in Northern Dutchess and getting them listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was born September 13, 1942 daughter of John T. & Julia J. Tobin O'Neill. On December 27, 1964 she married Geoffrey Carr. He survives at home. In addition to her husband survivors include, a son Jonathan G. Carr of Rhinebeck, NY, 2 daughters, Leslie C. Carr-Avalos and her husband Armando of San Francisco, Ca. & Julia O. Carr of Manhattan, NY. Two brothers John T. O'Neill of Washington, DC. & William J. O'Neill of Red Hook & many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday at St. John´s Episcopal Church, River Rd., Barrytown. The Rev. Bruce Chilton will officiate. Interment will be in St. John's Episcopal Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 PM to 4 PM & 7 PM to 9 PM at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook.
