Description

Professor Gallup and students at the Mountain View Academy in Upper Red Hook, c. 1870, when private classes were conducted in the south room of the Academy. (it is unclear whether the building pictured here is the first URH public school or the first Academy -Grange Hall). Miss Eliza Minerva Pitcher was the teacher there when construction was commenced on the new District #6 Public School across from the Dutch Reformed Church about 1877. Teacher Albert P. Smith had moved his public school classes into the north of the Academy for that duration. Upon completion in 1879, Miss Pitcher and Mr. Stone became the first teachers at the new public school. Information about subsequent teachers at the academy is unavailable. Fire destroyed it in 1917 (7-4), was rebuilt in-kind by St. Johns R.C., Horse Thieves Society and the Red Hook Grange and was hence called both the Academy Hall and Grange Hall. Fire destroyed the building again in 1954. No physical traces remain.
