Biographical/Historical Note
The donor of this collection, Mark McNally, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McNally of Red Hook, New York. He attended Red Hook schools and at the time of donation he lived in Lake Katrine, New York with his wife Kathryn. He had one surviving brother, Edward Mc- Nally, and one deceased brother, James McNally. Many of his ancestors, some of whom are pictured in the album photos, were residents of Red Hook dating in some cases to at least the 1860’s.
Mark McNally’s father, Edward Mitchell McNally (1912-2004) is buried at St. Paul’s Luther- an Cemetery, Red Hook, New York, and his name is on the War Memorial tablet for World War II, Town of Red Hook Veterans, at Memorial Park, Red Hook. According to his obituary in the Rhinebeck Gazette Advertiser, April 15, 2004, he lived in Red Hook from 1946 until 2001, when he moved to Rhinebeck. Starting as a salesman in the Voorhis-Tiebout Co., Inc. in 1936, he ended up as president of the company. He lived a busy life, which included ser- vice as a Navy lieutenant in World War II, membership in St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook, membership in the American Legion in Tivoli, New York, and for 50 years was presi- dent of the Red Hook Library Board. He was also on the board of directors of the First na- tional Bank and the Regional Board of Key Bank SE.
The wife of Edward McNally was Margery Armstrong (1918-2006), who spent her child- hood in Red Hook until high school, then returned during her marriage. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of the Red Hook Garden Club and of the Eg- bert Benson Historical Society of Red Hook.
The surnames in Mark McNally’s family tree that are particularly familiar in Red Hook his- tory are Hoffman, Allendorf, and Beekman. Here is his lineage: Lydia Beekman (1791-1826- died in Red Hook), a daughter of Benjamin Beekman (1762-1793) and Rebecca Thompson, was married to George Conrad Hoffman (1787-1863). Lydia and George had many children including Benjamin Beekman Hoffman (1821-1901), most of whom were born in Red Hook. The wife of Benjamin was Permelia Rancher (1824-1896) and their children included Charles Beekman Hoffman (1855-1921). The wife of Charles Beekman Hoffman was Fannie Allendorf ((1860-1941), Among their children were Marjorie Edith Hoffman (1885-1972) whose spouse was Lorenzo M.Armstrong (1886-1943). A daughter of Lorenzo M. Arm- strong and Marjorie Edith Hoffman was Marjorie M. Armstrong (1918-2006) the wife of Edward Mitchell McNally and grandmother of Mark McNally (ancestry.com- public member trees and assorted documents, source of these family connections).
There is an album in this donation whose cover is labeled with the name Fannie. So far only one Fannie has been discovered in Mark McNally’s family tree. As noted previously, Fannie Allendorf was the wife of Charles Beekman Hoffman. She was also the daughter of Alexan- der Allendorf. Lydia Beekman’s extended family tree included persons with the surname Shook. Other names in the family tree of Mark McNally include Stickle, Bates, and Feller. Philip Stickle’s mother, for example, was Sarah Sally Feller (1838-1914).
