In the beginning of the year we decided to try to help other people. This decision led to our clothing drive for the Save the Children Federation. The drive was successful with a total of 55 ship ping bags filled. We have just started another service project to help raise money for a new U.S. medical ship sponsored by the Tom Dooley Federation. The money for the ship will have been raised by different youth organizations throughout the United States. We have organized student exchanges with other area schools such as Arlington, Rhinebeck, Pine Plains, and Coleman High School. We will send students to their schools for one day and they will send students to our school for one day. This provides the opportunity to see how other schools are run. We also have a committee to help the cafeteria staff plan the school lunch menus. This was formed after the rise in prices. The Student Council was also able to increase their treasury by the profits made from the school pictures in the High School and Mill Road School. We were able then to donate two hundred dollars to the Yearbook Staff to insure a fme year book. An entertaining Christmas Assembly was possible thanks to Joe Gerace, assembly committee chairman and vice-president of the Student Council. Linda Bowman and Janet Greene also worked hard all year as treasurer and secretary, respectively. Most important of all though, are the members of the council and members of the student body who worked hard on the projects I mentioned and on others. We wanted to broaden our horizons with new ideas which created a meaningful atmosphere and influence upon lives. Therefore, it was with this thought in mind, that we attempted to build this yearbook. The 1972 Hardscrabble has many new aspects, which we think, add to the memories of our high school years. Included this year in our yearbook, is a unique addition which we proudly entitle "Senior Scrapbook." This section is an account of the way which we behaved as Seniors. It has been created for the purpose of providing the graduating class with a gallery of memories. We have added new thoughts, including a candid of almost every Senior. We have deleted ego-inflating trivia such as Sen ior Favorites. We found that each senior, as an individual is the best in everything which he attempts, so it was impossible to record an accurate tally. Let it be said that, if such a contest were held, there would be a 155 way tie for first place. The Cia of 72 began their 1968-1969 Freshman year with $318. and fini hed with $380. Our activitie included selling refre hments at a November football game, and a March class dance, featuring the "Revolutions" from Pine Plains. Weal o took part in the moving up day ceremony and voted for class polls. We changed our meeting format that year. Because of the large size of our class (nearly 200) it was impos sible, we were told, to allow the entire class to meet, so we elected two representatives from each homeroom. The activities of our sophomore year (1969-70) were the usual selling of refreshments at the football game, and a class dance with Nirvana. During this year, one of our advisors, Mr. White, died. John Maynard, Student Council Pres. suggested that it would be an appropriate memorial to purchase one of Mr. White's paintings to hang in the hall. He asked that each class contribute toward this purchase. Because of much con trover y among students and teachers on this is ue, we decided to hold out until more information could be obtained. It was not until about a year later that the school finally obtained a memorial painting, however, it was not done by Mr. White. That year we also formed the Student Faculty Committee. Buying of Cia s rings and the Christmas Ball were added to our usual class activities in our Junior year. The Christmas Ball theme was Jingle Bell Rock and featured the BWAP. To change the format of the dance, we held a buffet in the cateteria before. Much hard work was put in by both students and advisors to make our dance the success that it was. Work began on the yearbook and Karen Kowalski was selected as Editor. Marion Grieg was selected as DITTO Editor. The yearbook, cia trip and especially graduation seem to be the prime events on our minds this year. The yearbook staff is compiling a fanta tic yearbook, filled with new ideas and innovation . The elling of refreshments at two football games increased our trea ury. Buii-Angu performed at our dance and we made a profit of $650. Several guys gained recognition in football being named to the All-Star Team. The girls showed that their strong points were in hickey, basketball, and gymnastics. Besides enriching our athletic abilities, many of us got involved in seeking admis ion to colleges to enrich our cultural knowledge. We leave this school now, to seek our fame and fortune as individuals striving for recognition. 92 Our Foreign Exchange Student Writing a few words in the yearbook gives me a good opportunity to let you know how great my year in Red Hook has been. I have learned so much at this school, especial ly in English. I have enjoyed attending classes, knowing people, talking about my country and going to parties and A.F.S. weekends. I do believe that the term "Thank you" does not express how grateful I really am. I am grateful to the kids at the school who were so friendly. They made me feel as though I had been here for a long time. I am also grateful to the teachers; they helped me a lot and were always around when I needed help. I want to say thanks to the community, to the A.F .S. Chapter and to my American family. I appreciate this year so much and I will always remember it. Don't forget where Ecuador is.
