Old Edgewater - copy of postcard. Caption in 'A Brief History of Red Hook' reads: This classic Greek Revival house, set at the water's edge at Barrytown, was built in 1820 by John R. Livingston for his daughter Margaretta Livingston Brown. When the new railroad was constructed, passing her east windows by just a few yards and bringing with it noise and soot, the then widowed Mrs Brown sold the house to Robert Donaldson and fled in indignation to Europe. She never returned. Donaldson commissioned A. J. Davis in 1853 to design several buildings and a magnificent octagonal library. In the 1950's author Gore Vidal lived there"
It was later owned by Richard Jenrette, who has renovated and restored the house and grounds, now owned by the Classical American Homes Trust.Photograph Details
