Copy of postcard of the Gottlieb Martin-Cookingham House. Caption in 'A Brief History of Red Hook' reads: Built in the summer of 1776 by Gottlieb (sometimes spelled Gottlop) Martin for his newly married son, the stuccoed stone house remained in the Martin famly until Oakleigh Cookingham bought the farm in 1933. The cornerstone was laid July 4 1776. It is said that a small contingent of Continental soliders passed by the Old Post Road as the frame was raised that summer, dropped their gear and lent a hand.Subject Place
