For over fifty years Dr. Losee traveled the country far and near, ministering with skill, enthusiasm, gentility and generosity to the bodily ailments of ???, ??? ??? at the same time with words of sympathy, hope and strength for both the suffering and their sorrowing households. At length he who had helped so many was himself made helpless by a rarely occurring malady that refused to yield to treatment. Dr. Losee was born in the town of Washington, September 16, 1826 and was one of eight children. In boyhood he removed with his father’s family to Saratoga County, where he lived for six years with an uncle, working at farming. Later by teaching and efforts in other directions the young man earned his way to a medical education. Graduating at the Albany Medical School in 1852, after a period of service in the old New York Hospital, Dr. Losee accepted an opportunity to settle in Upper Red Hook in December 1853 as partner with Garfield Wheeler, M. D. This partnership terminated after some months and the young doctor built up rapidly an independent and highly successful practice. On June 26, 1862 Dr. Losee was married to Miss Mary E, daughter of Edwin Knickerbocker of Madalin. Two sons, Edwin K and Harvey, were given to them, both physicians and successors to their father’s practice. The elder Dr. Losee (Egbert Losee) became a professing Christian and church member while still a young man, uniting with the Reformed Church of Northumberland, Saratoga County whence he took his brother to the Reformed Church of Upper Red Hook in 1858. A younger brother (Harvey S Losee) became a lawyer and died in New Orleans. An Older brother (Alexander T Losee) was a physician for many years in the town of Germantown. Two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Chantz (Mrs. Leon Chantz) of Saratoga Springs and Mrs. Sarah Tile (Mrs. Leverette T. Teel) of Mechanicsville (Stillwater, north of Mechanicville), survive. A long life well spent has left behind amble legacy of cherished memories. The long months of invalidism brought many comforting recompenses to both the patient and the family circle. The end came suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, at daybreak. Dr. Losee knew intimately the older physicians of Poughkeepsie, and was a frequent visitor to the city. Ron Losee reports, he's seen a letter that he wrote to his brother, John Eckert Losee. In the letter, Ron sensed that Harvey was sorry for embarrassing his brother for having rebelled. There was love of brother for brother because John E named his second son Harvey, after his rebel brother. Was on intimate terms with Gen. W. T. Sherman who taught at military school nearby in LA. Harvey was living in LA when the war broke out. He decided that rather than risk his family's life he'd stay and fight for the south. He refused to be an officer and entered the war as a private. At the battle of Pittsburg Landing, Gen. Beauregard found him leading his company after all the officers had either fled or been killed. After this the General gave Harvey a sword. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh where a musket ball struck his hand, causing the loss of some fingers.
