Dear Friend of Trudeau,
Another year has come to pass in the long history of Trudeau. This is our 70th year as a sanatorium. Soon we will admit our 12,500th patient. I think that there is something significant and impressive in the face that there are over 5,000 of them living today. It is a tribute to the work, the wisdom, and the devotion that have gone into making the record of those 70 years.
This milestone emphasizes the vast changed which have taken place since patient #1 was treated with belladonna for sweating, morphine for his cough, and outdoor exercise and sleeping. Today's patient is treated with methods and drugs whose very names were unheard of then -- resection, streptomycin, isoniazid, pneumoperitoneum.
The original spark for today's vast assault against this disease came from the slopes of Mt. Pisgah. The same scene sees Trudeau continuing an active, pioneering part in these developments of today and tomorrow. We continue to need your help to carry on into our 71st year.
During 1953 our sights are again set on a goal of $125,000 to close the gap between our income and our expenditures for patient care, research, teaching and free bed support. I ask you to take your part in helping us achieve our aim. Your gift will be most welcome and appreciated.
Sincerely, Gordon M. Meade, M.D., Medical Director.Transcriber
