Scope and Content

1917 Physician's Daily Memorandum. Small hardcover book produced as a promotional item for Pepto-Mangan (“Gude”), compliments of M. J. Breitenbach Company, New York City. Each day has facts and suggestions for use of Pepto-Magnan. Was used as a diary for an unidentified individual living in the area (probably Keene). Has printed photograph and dedication inside to Dr. Edward L. Trudeau. Dedication reads, "Edward Livingston Trudeau, M.S., M.D., LL.D. 'He blazed the way.' This may be truthfully said of the subject of this brief sketch. Fired with the enthusiasm of the true physician, and futher impelled by his own plight as a tuberculous subject, Trudeau, in this country at least, did more than any other one man to establish and render practicable the open air treatment of the 'Great White Plague.' At Saranac, he was idolized, throughout the United States he was beloved, and all over the civilized world he was respected for his peronal qualities of mind and heart, his professional abilities as scientist and physician and his dogged persistence and tenacity of purpose in the face of obstacles that would have caused most men to despair of success. In his beloved Adirondacks, where most of his work was accomplished, he passed away November 15, 1915, at the age of 67, leaving the world immeasurably better because of his life and services. At Saranac Lake there stands a monument to his memory the world-renowned Adirondack Cottage Sanitorium, which owes its existence and success to his professional zeal and broad humanitarianism." Has photograph of unidentified individuals tucked inside. The January 19, 1917 entry includes, "Lulu gone to Augustine's funeral at Saranac Lake." This refers to the funeral of Augustine Branch, co-owner of Branch & Callanan.
