Description

Letter sent from Edward Livingston Trudeau to William A. Leonard, December 19, [1878]. 1s, 4p. Letter reads, "Saranac Lake, December 19th. My Dear Mr. Leonard, I must thank you for the trouble you took about my little article for the Church[?]. It was very king of you to send it to them for me. Mrs. Trudeau got home safely after a very pleasant visit among her friends and the children are both well. They have lessons now twice a day and a very nice teacher who teaches the school here. We are very quit this winter as Mr. Jones and Mr. R[?] are the only invalids here. Mr. Jones has already gained 20lbs!! The Church [St. Luke's] is finished and we are only waiting for the windows, chancel fountain, etc. before putting the last touches. I wrote to Mrs. Smith some few weeks ago about the altar but have not heard from her. I also wrote to Mrs. Edgar about the Church and she is to give the bell in memory of her son who died here. Some lady in Philadelphia a friend of Mr. Lundy's is to give the communion service so that the thing will be quite complete by January. Mr. Howard is going to come up on January 9th with one ore two other clergymen and / we are to have the opening service on the evening that day. We hope to have several services that week. Cannot you come up at the time and bring Mrs. Leonard. You [?] you as good as promised one rainy day which we were waiting in the Church. I sincerely hope you may be able to and we are looking forward to seeing you then. Mrs. [?] has promised to come if she can get an escort. I think the change would be pleasant for you and you could have a good sleigh ride and see the woods as they look in winter. Al Fitz and I have / formed a fox club and had great times hunting this fall. We killed thirteen foxes in the last month, Fitz five and Al and I four apiece. The weather has been very stormy and unusually mild for this time of year. We all hope to get over to St. John's for Christmas and have a [?] for the children in the dining room at Paul's. Mr. Morgan I understand is going to spend the winter at St. Regis. Please write soon and tell me you are coming. Mrs. Trudeau joins me in sending all sorts of kind messages to Mr. Leonard and yourself. Believe me I am Sincerely Yours, E. L. Trudeau." Is glued inside a copy of the Autobiography by Edward Livingston Trudeau, owned by William A. Leonard [2024.1.123]. Glued in at page 139.
