Description

Typewritten letter sent by Edward Livingston Trudeau to William A. Leonard, December 7, 1915. On letterhead reading, "E. L. Trudeau, M. D., Consultation by Appointment. Saranac Lake, N. Y." 2s, 2p. Has been trimmed at edges to fit inside book. Letter reads, "Right Reverend W. A. Leonard, D. D., 3054 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. My Dear Bishop:-- It is always a pleasure to hear from you, and it carries me back to the old, happy days at Paul Smith's which I love to dwell upon. I am very glad to hear from you that Doctor Bishop is coming here to stay. I could not help being pleased to think that the school for tuberculosis which I have started here was thought sufficiently good for him to select when he found he could not go to Germany. I am afraid there is a disappointment in store for him, however, in the illness of Dr. Krause, of my laboratory. Krause is a perfectly wonderful mind and a wonderful teacher. He complained of some slight symptom last week, and I sent him down to the Johns Hopkins Hospital at once. They found a very serious state of things, -- probably a malignant growth, -- and he has had a frightful operation from which he is just beginning to recover. However, if Dr. Bishop comes I think he will find a gooddeal [sic] to interest him here, and Mrs. Trudeau and I will be glad to see him and his wife. I am no use whatever, being confined mostly to my room and often to my bed, and so full of a variety of physical / miseries that life is principally made up of them. But I take as active an interest as ever in all that is going on about me, and I like to see the young men come up and shoulder the load. War, no matter how terrible, comes and goes; but tuberculosis goes on forever, and I have just been writing my Thirtieth Annual Report of the Sanitarium. I can hardly believe it is over forty years since I first went to Paul Smith's so sick. Certainly I have seen my share of the tragedy of life since then! Lottie and I both send love to Mrs. Leonard. Lottie told me to tell her that the little baby she used to play with -- who I believe was Francis -- is now practicing medicine here, and he and his wife have a home near us. He is six feet four, and weighs 235 pounds. We both send you and Mrs. Leonard our best love and best wishes. Very sincerely, E. L. Trudeau." Is glued inside a copy of the Autobiography by Edward Livingston Trudeau, owned by William A. Leonard [2024.1.123]. Glued in at pages 217 and 219.
