Scope and Content

Letter sent by Nettie Hardin Brand to her mother, Violet Barnard Brand, June 15, 1902. On letterhead from the Berkeley House, reading, "All the Year 'Round, Adirondack Mountain Resort. The Berkeley, Saranac Lake, N. Y., John Harding, Proprietor," with an illustration of the sun over a body of water and pine trees. 5s, 5p. Letter reads: "My Dearest Mother: You probably surmised when you rec'd [?] last telegram that we were homeward bound. We [?] got this far and to-morrow are going to the station below, Saranac Inn. We left Quebec Thursday night on the sleeper. We were in Montreal the next morning and came down to Lake Clear, where we spent the day, coming over here Friday night. Yesterday was perfectly beautiful, one of a very few pleasant days in the past [?], and we made the most of it by hiring a fine rig and driver and going over to Lake Placid & Mirror Lake. They are near together and very lovely and we enjoyed our ride immensely. Today it has rained again but we managed to drive over to Saranac Lake. (This place is only the town). That [?] is very fine. We feel that we ought to start for home but are rather [?] to leave this mountain air. It is doing us both good. But we haven't heard one word from home except the telegram in Montreal last Sunday. That is the reason that we have sent telegrams so often. We or rather I have realized that it would be hard for you to reach us, as we have bolted about so, so every once in a while I have given you a good chance to communicate with us. We did have such a beautiful time in Quebec. This seems rather tame by comparison, but as I said, we are obliged to loaf on account of the rain and the air and good plain food is beneficial. There are lots of invalids here. I don't enjoy that part nor the being in town, so will be glad to move on to-morrow. We'll stay at Saranac Inn or some other place for a day or two and then start home. I am entirely rested from the wedding and feeling quite like settling the house. I wish that I knew how you all were - and what the effects of the affair were upon you. We left word in Plattsburgh to have mail forwarded by we never got a thing. We have had such a happy time that we have a crazy idea that we'll always be happy but I suppose that we'll strike a few snags. I hope however, nothing serious. If you can all be well, that is the main thing. No more to-night. Will write once more. We are planning to reach Detroit in the morning & spend a half day there, getting home at 4:48 same afternoon. With lots of love to each and all [?] as ever. Nettie. Will sends love. There are lots of Indian things here. Would you like a basket? N."
