Description

Clipping cut from The Parish Record, Vol. 1, No. 3, February, 1912. Includes transcriptions of letters sent between Bishop William A. Leonard and Edward Livingston Trudeau. 1s, 2p. Letters read: "Cleveland, December 9, 1911. Dr. E. L. Trudeau Adirondacks, N.Y. My Very Dear Friend--In looking over a file of old letters yesterday, I came across the enclosed which is certainly a voice from the past, and which will, I think, interested you in its reminiscence. Those sweet primitive days brought great delight to all of us, and to no one more than your dear self is God's reward for the splendid service rendered for Him and others. I sometimes think we don't have to wait to die in order to get our heaven, but that the Lord grants us the consciousness of service here. With that service there always comes satisfaction, and appreciation of those to whom we minister. I certainly have had that experience in my long life of ministry, and I know that you have, for there are hundreds that rise up and call you blessed. Affectionately your friend, William A. Leonard." "Enclosed letter: Saranac Lake, Jan. 29, 1879. My Dear Mr. Leonard: I have to thank you for your very kind letter of December 31. We were very sorry that you should be obliged to give up coming up for a month's visit, but I can understand how busy you are. Many thanks for all your kind words and good wishes for the new year. Mrs. Trudeau joins me in wishing Mrs. Leonard and yourself all sorts of good things for the ensuing year. The church [St. Luke's] is now completed at last and we now have regular services there. The Bishop decided that there would be no special opening services so that Mr. Knapp conducted the first service alone. There was a bout two hundred present, ten adults were baptized and after a short address, we had a communion service. The Bishop is coming up on February 12 to consecrate the building, I believe several clergymen will come with him. I yet hope that you may manage it so as to be with us, for you, much more than myself, are the pioneer of this work and I should like you to be present to witness the fruit of your service in these mountains. I think you will be pleased when you see the church; the interior is specially beautiful; Mrs. Townsend's three window are the handsomest things of the kind I have seen in a long time. The furniture is of butternut and very suitable and elegant. The whole thing cost $4,000 and is paid for. I hope something may be done by the Bishop to secure "efficient and vigorous ministration" now that so much has been done. Please tell Mrs. Smith about the consecration and that we shall be very glad to see her if she can manage to come. I will write her in a few days about the safe arrival of the very beautiful altar she presented. By hte way, I heard one of the men who were scrutinizing it on its arrival, say to the admiring crowd that the large I. H. S. [?] stood for Harold Smith!!! I think that Mr. Knapp has work enough already! We have all been comfortably well this winter. Mrs. Trudeau at present has a cold, but until that she was unusually well. I have had great sport fox hunting with Al. and Fitz and we have killed 18 foxes already. Schnapp and Gretchen, I am sorry to say are both dead. I really do hope that you may yet manage to come up. I can promise you and Mrs. Leonard a warm welcome. We are alone again just now, and Mrs. Jones went home today on account of her mother's illness. With love from both of us to Mrs. Leonard and yourself. Every Sincerely, E. L. Trudeau." Is glued inside a copy of the Autobiography by Edward Livingston Trudeau, owned by William A. Leonard [2024.1.123]. Glued in at page 265.
