Scope and Content

To China and Back on the Houqua, 1846 "[Thacher] has completed her transcription and analysis of the largely unknonwn journals of two young people who sailed in 1846 on the third voyage of the tea-clipper Houqua, designed and commanded by Stonington's Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer. One was the captain's niece, Sarah Elizabeth Fanning of New York, 20 years old. The other, Thomas Benedict 3d of Norwalk, 22 years old, was a member of the crew. The journals provide fresh accounts of life aboard one of the swift greyhounds of the China trade."
