Description

Propounded Wedding Vest of Nathaniel Brown Palmer The First N.B.Palmer married Eliza Babcock in 1826 A 1935 article in "The Day" described the "wedding vest" as embroidered N.B.Palmer II married Harriet Wilder in 1872 Does the evidence in the textile confirm the provenance? Let's look at what can be confrimed. 1. Machine and handstitching places date post 1840,(N.B. Plamer married in 1826) 2. Straighter line as opposed to corsested look prior to 1850 3. The brass fastener reads Paris. Both N.B. Palmer the first and N.B.Palmer II spent the winter of 1871 in Southern France 4. Intricate weave of linen and silk with a slight sheen 5. Five handmade button and stud holes 6. Center back french seam 7. Four slightly angled breast pockets with decorative 1/4 inch binding, and one deep inside pocket on right 8. Decorative binding on front edges 9. N.B.Palmer in cursive, clearly written on back vest tab (does not match signed script of N.B. Palmer on letter to brother Alexander dated May 11, 1870) 10. Armsage seam to armsage seam 19.5 inches, 23.5 inches from shoulder seam to front peak, 19.5 inches from shoulder seam to front straight edge, (not stout measurements) Could it be the Wedding Vest of N.B.Plamer II or just a formal vest of N.B.Plamer I or II ? More research is required for a definitive response.
