Collection of 23 letters collected by members of the Wheeler family, 1693 - 1884:
1. One-page handwritten letter from Hiram Appelman to F. A. Palmer, dated 09 MAR 1863, discussing health and leave of military service
2. One-page handwritten letter from David S. Hart to D. Hamilton Hurd, Esq., dated 31 AUG 1881 in which the writer states he has enclosed a copy of a piece he wrote for the Stonington Mirror regarding the attack on Stonington on 30 AUG 1775 headed by Commodore Sir James Wallace, for forwarding to Richard A. Wheeler for his book on the History of Stonington
3. One-page handwritten letter from J.D. Fish to H. B. Noyes, written on “Marine National Bank”, Wall Street, NY, letterhead dated 16 AUG 1870 discussing the estate of N. Fish and the transfer of stock certificates, suggesting Richard A. Wheeler submit a letter authorizing transfer
4. One-page handwritten letter from William Read and Sons to Richard A. Wheeler on “William Read & Sons, Guns, & Gun Materials” letterhead, Boston, MA to Richard A Wheeler, dated 06 JUN 1868 regarding a bill in the amount of $5880.00
5. Eight-page handwritten letter from Aug. A. Galloupe, Beverly, MA, with a copy of the Will of Thomas Browne and deeds f his three sons, Thomas, John and Eleazer Browne, addressed to “Dear Sir”, dated 27 FEB 1884; in an envelope with a printed return address to Richard A. Wheeler and handwritten information on the envelope; the will was found in Salem, MA at the Registry of Deeds and Records, Book 18, Essex Co., MA
6. One-page handwritten letter in purple ink from Ellen Larreau dated 2 AUG 1873, partially erased and illegible due to age and liquid stains requesting genealogical information possibly on Dyer
7. One-page handwritten note from William H. Potter to Richard A Wheeler, written on “Assistant Assessor’s Office, US IRS, 3rd District” letterhead dated 30 MAR 1868 discussing taxable income
8. One-page handwritten letter from A. S. Chesebrough to R.A. Wheeler dated 25 AUG 1881 in which the writer has taken offense to the use of “Squatters Sovereignty”, a term used by R.A. Wheeler at the Palmer reunion when talking about the original founders of Stonington
9. One-page printed and handwritten notice on “State of Connecticut” letterhead” to R.A. Wheeler’s elected one year appointment as probate judge for the year beginning 4 JUL 1870, signed by Hiram Appelman, Secretary of State, 22 APR 1870
10. Two-page handwritten letter from Wm. R. Avery, Cincinnati on “Aetna Insurance Company of Hartford” letterhead to “Dear Uncle”, R.A. Wheeler, dated 29 MAY 1875; discusses his time in Stonington as a boy, his life in Cincinnati, his physical description and age, age at which he moved to OH, his employment and civic organizations; general family letter
11. Two-page handwritten letter from A. Chester, Counselor and Attorney, US Supreme Court to Richard Wheeler, dated 20 NOV 1878[writing light and difficult to read in some areas]; appears to be general chat about life’s happenings
12. One-page handwritten letter from William Harris, New London, to Richard Wheeler discussing the Battle of Groton and requesting any information Mr. Wheeler may have as to the locations of the graves of those that were killed
13. One-page handwritten letter from D.A. Daboll, Center Groton, to R. A. Wheeler, dated 8 JUL 1878 in which the writer requests the help of Mr. Wheeler in identifying and collecting the balance of money owed to him for charting Stonington Harbor
14. Two-page handwritten letter from George D. Stanton, on “Selectman’s Office” letter head, to R.A. Wheeler, dated 24 JUL 1885 discussing town boundaries, the original Napatree point and the need for arbitration regarding the ownership of Sandy Point
15. One-page handwritten letter from A.G. Frink to R.A. Wheeler, dated 25 MAY 1872 discussing proceedings in which Senator Potter and Rep. Clift were to engage in regarding the jurisdiction of the People and Territory of Mystic Island; the writer wants to know if the Town of Stonington would set up a claim; the writer mention that it would “cost as much to suppress rum selling” as they would receive in taxes
16. One-page handwritten letter by F. Bill, Groton, to “my Dear Sir” dated 14 OCT 1881 discussing the amount of money turned over to the Groton Memorial Association and the amount that will most likely be raised by pledges
17. One-page handwritten letter from Charles Allyn on “Charles Allyn Books, Stationery, Bookbinder and Blank Book Manufacturer” letterhead, to Richard A. Wheeler discussing errors in the letter writer’s facts regarding Edward Stanton
18. One-page handwritten letter from Hiram Appleman to Richard Wheeler, dated 18 OCT 1864, regarding the estate of James Stewart; mentions family affiliations and current residence of family members [letter is somewhat difficult to read due to penmanship]
19. One-page handwritten letter from C. Whittersley [?] with Music Vale Seminary embossed in the upper left hand corner, dated 22 MAR 1869; discussing the voting preference of several members
20. One-page letter from Mrs. Francis .E. Wheeler, North Stonington to Mr. Wheeler, dated 6 FEB 1869 in which she states she will supply a bill to him at a later date and before she will settle with Grinnell and Sons they will have to show their books
21. One-page letter from James A. Latham, Noank, to Richard A. Wheeler, dated 15 OCT 1873, inquiring whether a meeting will occur before the road partition committee meets and makes a decision
22. One-page handwritten letter by N.S. Frink [?] on Merritt, Gray & Co.” letterhead to R.A. Wheeler, dated 28 JUN 1882 requesting a meeting as soon as possible regarding the finances of the monument committee
23. One-page handwritten letter from Henry Tyler, Moosup, to “my dear Father” dated FEB 1883 in which he discusses getting affidavits from various people in various towns, including Dr. Soule and Elisha Phinney and having them notarized by E. C. Kenyon; mentions a letter he received from Dr. Dodge in KS in which it was relayed that more than a dozen people had died from the small pox and it was all around the Great Bend, KS areaCollection
