Postcard sent from Dan Jones to Gay Warren in July of 2000. The note reads:
"Dear Gay,
I'm about to photograph an immense specimen of Murlein that appeared in a little patch of succulents by my front gate and send the picture to you. It's taller than the undersigned and an object of curiosity with my confreres of the immediate neighborhood - I did not plant it - And I never saw anything among "Rabbit's ears" that could touch this specimen.
While we're on the subject, do you know "verbascum Helen Johnson"? If not, make its acquaintance. A tidily elegant creature, probably best planted in a clutch of 3. (It's a pygmy compared to my gargantuan surprise visitor.)
I've had a total of 8 hours to spend in my garden. Thank heavens for these monstrously flowering perennials. And for your superb initial underpinning of seaweed.
