Description

Photograph from the Harry Northup album (2015.019.002), 8" x 10" print. Caption from Harry Northrup: "This is a view of Stonington from the top of the hill at Montauk Ave. Note: the steamers at the dock and schooner in the Harbor. The steamer on the North side of the dock is the RHODE ISLAND. There is a string of boxcars on the siding, perhaps bringing supplies for the steamers. Today there are many expensive homes in that same area. Watch Hill is in the background, at the very left of the photo. Towards the left of center you can make out the Watch Hill Lighthouse and, at the time, the Life Saving Station. Just to the right of the Atwood Machine Co., Fort Mansfield can be seen in the background. Notice how empty the harbor is with just a very few small boats at there moorings. It wasn't like it is today with maybe a hundred good size sailboats moored there. In the upper harbor above the New Haven Railroad tracks, there appears to be two men in a skiff, spearing for eels or clamming. To me it must have been a wonderful time to be living in the Borough of Stonington."
