Scope and Content

typed copy of Poem sent by Capt. Alexander S. Palmer to his wife Priscilla: "Alexander Smith Palmer (1806-1894), a Stonington resident and brother of Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer, was also a sealer, a sea captain and celebrated commander of clipper ships. He and his brother Nat built the Palmer-Loper house on Palmer Street in Stonington in 1850. In about 1843 he wrote to his wife from Liverpool, enclosing the following poem, I am a bold Sea Captain, The Queen she loveth me, My Palace is a noble ship, My garden is the sea, There's many a heart that beats for me, Beyond the heavy main - The black-eyed girls of Mexico, The Ladies of New Spain! But, beautiful although they be, They win no love of mine, I'd give a thousand flashing eyes, For but one glance of thine. -Alexander" courtesy of Harriet B. Brown
