Dress made for Elizabeth Hawley Hoyt for her marriage to Edward A. Day, October 21, 1881.
Ladies three piece dress - silk and cotton, cranberry red and black stripes. The body of the dress is handsewn, and alterations have been made later with a machine.
Bodice is front closure - 8 handsewn button holes. Some of the hooks and eyes have been replaced. 7 thread covered buttons, 3 sewn in place, 1 held by a safety pin and 3 loose. small lace trim around the neckline. Armasage sets low from shoulder, wide arms in v shape, trimmed with frayed cruffled of some fabric. Fares at waist with ruffled trim. Back is gathered at waist and lined with brown cotton.
Overskirt is handsewn with edges trimmed in frayed cruffle, and lined with brown cotton that is different from the bodice. There is an inseam pocket on the right. back has gathered panel for bustle.
Underskirt is full, some cartridge pleating remains, and is handsewn. Lined with brown cotton, which is different from the overskirt and bodice. Hem is trimmed in black cording folded over the edge.Collection
